Dominican Novitiate

On September 1st, 2007 at 10:30a, three novices made their first profession of vows. It was a stunning Mass with over 300 people in attendance! Lay people and religious from dozens of religious communities all over the US and Canada converged on St. Dominic’s Church in San Francisco.

The men of the class of 2006/2007 are novices no more! They have made their simple profession of vows and are now new students at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, California and residing at St. Albert’s priory in Oakland, California.

The novitiate of the Dominican Province of the Holy Name of Jesus (Western Dominican Province) is located at St. Dominic’s Priory in San Francisco, CA. It is the house of formation for the men who have just entered the province and it is a time of continued discernment in preparation for profession of first vows. The candidates entered a postulancy program on the Solemnity of the Assumption, August 15th and received their habit two weeks later after a silent retreat. This latter event marked their entrance into the novitiate. The novitiate ends a year later with a simple profession.

If you would like to reach us, please do not hesitate to send us a piece of email or drop us a note (  click here). Please note that this is a year of discernment for us, so we may or may not be able to respond as quickly as technology might allow.

If you have questions about formation, or you believe that you might have a Dominican vocation, please visit the Vocations page on our province website.
