Novice Reflections

St. Benedict’s Lodge, on the shores of the McKenzie River at the crossroads of McKenzie Bridge is an awesome place for retreat and recollection for the Brothers during the last few weeks of the Sumer. It is considered a temporary refuge where the Brothers come together to get a boost of energy, getting ready for the upcoming school year. Fortunately enough, as part of the continuing formation, we novices are being introduced to the students for the first time here. I enjoy spending time here at this retreat center and the surrounding area very much. To me, what can be better to have a beautiful view of the river from my window during daytime and at night to have it lulled us to sleep in the same way the mother would rock her baby. In addition, the air is always fresh; the hiking trails are numerous; the waterfalls are breathtaking; and the mountain ranges are majestic, especially for those who love backpacking. How precious it is to be able to receive such gifts bountifully.

Besides all of this, we are able to enjoy the fellowship of brotherhood for the first time in this bigger community. Believe me, there is nothing like it, especially if you have never had such experience within the context of a religious community. We pray, play, recreate, work, eat, and preach together and to one another. Heaven is not far if we keep our eyes, ears, hearts, souls and minds open. With the change of atmosphere, that our prayers become more meaningful when we sing hymns, psalms and canticles every morning, evening and night. It is the beauty of God’s creation that moves us and inspires us to adore Him more and more. Indeed, one day with in God’s house is better than a thousand elsewhere. When being one with this beautiful nature who in their right mind, would doubt the almighty hands of the Creator?
